The VACU-GUARD 150 line of filter devices combines the best of three classic chemical traps with proven vacuum protective (hydrophobic) PTFE membrane. The PTFE membrane is built into a pleated cartridge and is permanently fuse bonded inside the base of the capsule.

The usefulness of these devices can best be determined by laboratory professionals who understand and need the functions provided by the two basic components (chemical trap and hydrophobic PTFE filter).

These types of chemical traps have been recommended by Menniger and Vilardi for protection of vacuum pumps and the environment, from their exhaust, when used to "polish" incoming air from an evaporation system. Specifically it recommended: activated carbon for organic vapours, molecular sieve for organic and alkaline air streams, and desiccant for acidic air streams.

Desiccant
It contains anhydrous calcium sulfate prepared from natural gypsum and impregnated with calcium chloride. This desiccant is neutral, stable and chemically inactive toward reagents other than water. Its drying efficiency for gases is high because of its superior absorption of water (able to dry gases flowing at high velocities). It does not shrink, expand or disintegrate on absorption of water. With the addition of calcium chloride, the desiccant changes from blue to pink as the limit of absorption is reached. This colour change is easily seen through the translucent housing.
